Blu-Ray vs. standard DVD

Just went to purchase a video.
I'm not a big video watcher but I do have a HD video setup with a PS3 for the BR player, a 1080p television, and a surround amp. BR has been out for a while now, it's now the new technology that is supposed to take over by storm winning out over the HD format. Much to my disappointment the cost of BR disks are twice that of Standard def. What is with this -- sounds like typical Sony, once you have a standard, charge the end user for it, make them pay! This was seen with Beta Max, Sony Walkman cassette players, Sony memory sticks, and now Blu-Ray. Perfect example is the memory stick, 8GB will cost you 50 bucks, a comparable SD card you can pick up for 10-15 bucks.?

Did the right format win the HD format wars? Are we, the consumers, going to be forced into paying 2 times as much?

To me there is not enough value in BR to pay the price -- the decision was to purchase a Standard DVD. Up converted standard def look great too...

Sony, Please do not punish your users ----

WALMART DRM flips 360

Several months ago there was a purchase from Walmart's online music collection. Of course before most of the other major re-sellers had started to drop DRM. On September 26th I received this notice;

Important Information About Your Digital Music Purchases

We hope you are enjoying the increased music quality/bitrate and the improved usability of Walmart's MP3 music downloads. We began offering MP3s in August 2007 and have offered only DRM (digital rights management) -free MP3s since February 2008. As the final stage of our transition to a full DRM-free MP3 download store, Walmart will be shutting down our digital rights management system that supports protected songs and albums purchased from our site.

If you have purchased protected WMA music files from our site prior to Feb 2008, we strongly recommend that you back up your songs by burning them to a recordable audio CD. By backing up your songs, you will be able to access them from any personal computer. This change does not impact songs or albums purchased after Feb 2008, as those are DRM-free.

Beginning October 9, we will no longer be able to assist with digital rights management issues for protected WMA files purchased from Walmart.com. If you do not back up your files before this date, you will no longer be able to transfer your songs to other computers or access your songs after changing or reinstalling your operating system or in the event of a system crash. Your music and video collections will still play on the originally authorized computer.

Thank you for using Walmart.com for music downloads. We are working hard to make our store better than ever and easier to use.

Walmart Music Team

This Morning I received this email from Walmart.

NOTE: This is a follow-up to our email titled "Important Information
About Your Digital Music Purchases" from 9/26/08.

Based on feedback from our customers, we have decided to maintain our
digital rights management (DRM) servers for the present time. What this
means to you is that our existing service continues and there is no
action required on your part. Our customer service team will continue
to assist with DRM issues for protected windows media audio (WMA) files
purchased from Walmart.com.

While our customer support team is available to assist you with any
issues, we continue to recommend that you back up your songs by burning
them to a recordable audio CD. By backing up your songs, you insure
access to them from any personal computer at any time in the future.

We appreciate your support and patience as we work to provide the best
service possible to you. As we move forward with our 100% MP3 store,
we'll continue to update you with key decisions regarding our service
and your account via email.

Thank you for using Walmart MP3 Music Downloads.

Video Cards

In the market for a new video card? Go check out this very comprehensive video card analysis from Tom's Hardware. They have broken it down into several budget ranges.

Prepay utilities????

Just read this on Techdirt

http://techdirt.com/articles/20081003/1659112452.shtml

Since when do I have to pay for someones bad credit?
So here is the rip in the economy. In my business I'm billing due on receipt, 6 months ago this would mean that I would receive payment in 15 business days or less, now I'm receiving payment 60 - 90 days. Which in turns puts my cash flow out to the same time frame.

Two ways to look at this
1. AT$T is going to be pre-paying their vendors.
or
2. The more likely scenario AT$T is not going to pay their vendors for 60-90 days as usual form of business -- and we the people are stuck paying in advance for services not rendered. (good luck getting this money back when you close your account with them.)

This is going to cause a huge gap between those that have to pay before service and the large business that will continue to pay 60-90 days. That puts a 120 day gap between the the people and business. That's 4 months!! Banks start to foreclose on secured loans after about 60 days.

In short AT$T is living the same as the rest of us, from paycheck to paycheck with no savings. Now they want us to give them a paycheck 30 days before payday. (Reminds me of a payday loan company except we don't get to make 50% interest on the loan.)
Will the extra 30 days of cash help them out, short term yes. Long term this eats up what ever reserve they may have had.

Here is a solution; Drop AT$T as a service provider, the bank will foreclose on its assets, the assets will be sold to a stronger company, and life will go on without AT$T.

Who's next;
Will it be the power company that wants to be paid for power that I have not used? (I guess they are already doing this on some billing where you pay a fixed rate all year long)
How about your local grocery store?
Gas Station?

We better tighten our belts and hunker down, it's going to be a long Winter.

Creative HS-1200 Review

I just purchased a headset from http://www.newegg.com , and must say as always Newegg ROCKS!! The Creative HS-1200
http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=437&subcategory=442&product=17506

This is not your normal gaming Headset. This one has no attached wires. It seems to be similar to a blue tooth setup requiring a pairing process, this allows multiple headsets to occupy the same radio space. NOTE:: This is NOT a blue tooth device, so don't expect it to pair with your cell phone.

In The Box::
I have to say I was a little disappointed when I opened the box. I was expecting full surround headphones that go over the ears, not large pads that just cover the ears. I have used several headphones in the past and this type generally can only be worn for an hour or so before your ears start to hurt. The package came with a setup disk, manual, USB puck, and headset.

Get r' done::
The installation was painless. I did make the mistake of installing more than the headset drivers though. I was given the options of what to install, but found out later that the only required one was the headset driver. The other negative is Creative wants to install a background utility that will check for updates. I generally do not like these types of applications 1. They are generally poorly written 2. they take up memory space 3. they don't let you know they are running until you get a pop up...... The list goes on and on. The setup requires a restart of the computer. Once XP decided to return to a desktop I connected the small USB puck to an open port. There is a blue status light that starts to flash (looking for headset) after XP finds the new hardware. You may have to have XP find the HID driver after it is connected, I would guess this is for the extra buttons located on the headset to control your VOIP connect and disconnect functions. I turned on the headset and bingo bango bongo it was paired (I did not have to do anything.)

Usage::
This is where the experience changes. Once I placed the headset on, I did not get the expected pressure on my ears. While the pads did not go around my ears they did seem to cut out a majority of the background noise. I cranked up some music much to my enjoyment the speakers seem to have a high dynamic range (Don't expect these to replace your $30,000 speaker set.) There did seem to be a digital noise every so often, but I would expect no less on a set of wireless speakers.
So how comfy were they? I had them on my head for 7 hours today without any ear/head pain.
What kind of distance did I get? I was able to move 50' in all directions before the digital noise overcame the music. This was in a building with metal stud construction and lots of mass for the radio signal to travel through. It also reached the 2nd floor.
How about VOIP and SKYPE? The best I have ever heard, and the people on the other end enjoyed the clear mic sound. I was not able to get the SKYPE answer and hang up to work, but may have a solution for that now.
How long does the battery last? It was a little under the manufacture spec coming in at 7 hours of run time. The headset starts beeping to let you know you need to charge it.
How long does it take to charge the battery? 2 hours to charge over a laptop USB port. The USB puck has a wire that connects to the headset to charge it. The nice thing about this is if your in the middle of a game you don't have to remove your headset and place it in a charger, just connect the wire and your off and running.

Pros::
NO WIRES and it is a headset!
Sounds Great
Very light on your head
Comfortable

Cons::
Price
Digital Noise (even when close to the usb puck)
SKYPE setup was not an out of the box experience

Score::
4.5 out of 5

The Animals

RETRO LAN Party

Looks like Jake and his brother had a mini Retro Lan party and enjoyed it. I was wondering If we should all get together and set a larger one up.
GAMES;
Unreal Tournament II (loved this one)
Original DOOM (if we can get this one together and working)

Then nice thing about this is just about any computer can play it so there is no need for the latest and greatest in hardware.
Post your comments on other games to be played.

Sparks Lake

I am testing the ability to post photos on this blog, this is my first time posting on here. This photo was taken from Sparks Lake just a few days ago, the lake looks good right now. This is quite a famous place to take a photo of the lake. Some old Bank of America checks I had from the 90s had this image on the background of their checks.

I also tooks photos along the Green Lakes trailhead and Todd Lake

Economic Links

With the economy going down the tubes it helps to have websites that have an idea what is going on. The mainstream media keeps saying nothing is wrong or things will get better. But time and time again they are proven wrong.

These sites get very technical
http://www.safehaven.com/index.cfm
http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/
http://www.tickerforum.org/cgi-ticker/akcs-www?forum=Breaking
http://www.bullnotbull.com/bull/ This site is like Fark.com or Drudge. It collects links from other sources
http://www.depression2.tv/
http://www.theinternationalforecaster.com/ A very good site even though the writer has been more extreme in his writing.
http://www.goldclubasia.com/index.php a gold forum where readers can post
https://www.kitcomm.com/index.php

Understanding the way the economy works is key to understading why wars start, trade agreements are made, prices go up in products and many other happenings in the world in my opinion.

Bend Aero Modelers Airshow

We spent a few hours at the BAM airport this Saturday. This club has a very impressive airport setup. It's 700' long and it's paved. The pit area has material down to keep rocks and dust from getting to the runway. Very nice.
What a blast to see all the different types of planes. Even a Toro lawn mower, you have got to see this thing fly!! The kids had a great time. It was a little far for us go drive but was worth the time effort and fuel to get there.
Members of the BAM do this every year and camp out in the High Desert.
I will post some images as a slide show to the right.
Enjoy.

Common Courtesy and Respect

Where has it gone? Does it still exist? Does anyone know what it means? Are parents teaching this to their children, or are we expecting someone else to teach them.
Seems to me the number of juvenile punks are on the rise and no way to stop them. You can not reason with them, all you get is an argument.

But it's not just the kids.... It's also the Adults. Have you driven on the road lately? No wonder "road rage," is so prevalent.

Are people so stressed out that they have forgotten how to function as a society?

Looks like I only have questions and no answers.

How to format/wipe your Hard Drive

It's amazing what a high powered rifle can do to a Hard Drive. You can see the bullet went clean through the hard drive. One hard drive was no problem.... so we stacked up 5. No problem getting through 5 hard drives either. May be difficult to restore the data on this baby.

Saturday Fun

I have done some modification to the Blade 400. I cut a small block of foam out to mount to the heli. I then attached the camera mount to the block of foam. The end result was a camera that looked very stable. I did not have the same camera as before so I don't have a direct comparison, but I was able to take some still shots.

Two Weeks Since Black Thursday

So here we are at another Thursday. Two weeks later, after struggling to bring some kind of comfort to the social upset in the office, after being told that things are back on track...... bang! We are hit again. Another round of position eliminations. The horror of having to see people and families torn apart, co-workers and former co-workers harboring feelings of anger and sadness. I don't believe the company will ever be the same again.
Trust in the company having been lost, and the feelings of instability have returned to the office once again. This time the eliminations seem more erratic and puzzling. Those who are left are wondering, am I next?
It remains hard to stay focused on anything. It appears that the "writing is on the wall." I know that even in my own mind, I'm planning exit strategies.

How to cut your fuel bill in half!

Unhappy with the cost of fuel? If you google for saving money on gas you will get thousands of hits, and you will see some of the craziest ideas. If only people could use some common sense, and not believe everything you read or see on the internet.
I tried to calculate the US consumption of gasoline but was unable to come up with a solid number. Seems that everywhere I looked there were different answers, and they all used different inputs for the calculations. From the EPA web site I worked out 47.6 Billion Gallons/Year (I had to find the number of vehicles from another site and then average the total gallons from cars and trucks on the EPA web site), from http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question417.htm they show 146 Billion Gallons/Year.
If we as a "Nation" (AKA special interests) refuse to build more refineries, or drill for oil on our own land. Even if by some act of congress the US decided to move forward we would have to wait for the infrastructure to be built.

This solutions could happen in a few weeks. It would cut each drivers bill in half and reduce the US usage about 1/3. So what is this magic solution that you don't put in your tank?
CARPOOL!!
Along with reduced fuel costs, you would also benefit from cars extended life, reduce the demand on fuel supplies which would drop the price of fuel, more disposable cash for you to buy crap to support the economy. All it would take from you is flexibility, and this is much cheaper than some mysterious pooky you might put in your gas tank.

Lets not wait for the government to fix this, they have proven their inability to do so, WE THE PEOPLE should stand together in a large selfless act and fix our own country.

Slow Stick with camera

Here is a video I shot last fall with the Slow Stick. The plane was a little too heavy for any kind of smooth flight.

Blade 400 Heli 75-100'

Wow, here is a video of the Blade somewhere between 75 to 100'. The heli was so high that the colors for the landing gear went gray, and it was very hard to see what direction the heli was oriented. At one point it looked upside down. Jordon was out flying also, see if you can spot the Slow Stick airplane in the video.

GameNight

We should set a date before the French guy moves. Maybe it should be along the lines of a BBQ, and lan party. Consider it a going away party.

Give me some dates and times.....

Heli Video @ 45'

This was with the E-Flight Blade 400 Heli, and a Sony Cybershot DSC-P200. It was a little windy but I was able to shoot over the top of the house.I Have not determined how much the Blade 400 can lift, but this camera is quite heavy. I have also tried a very large KODAK camera must have been twice the weight. With the larger camera the heli was a little unstable and started to sway since the center of gravity is so low. The landing gear and camera mount are custom built for this heli, I may post pictures later.

I had the Camera out today in the higher wind, but was a little scared to go as high so the video is not as exciting.

Black Thursday

Slow economy, poor corporate planning, shrinking market, and many other factors have started this blog.

A technology group of 3 doing great things. A manager, and 2 indispensable technology gurus. We loved to spend countless hours on research and hard work in theory, project planning, implementation. Multiple changes to code, servers, and hardware. The blood sweat and tears of each member pored into projects, both complete or close to completion. A group of guys that liked to work hard, creating new ideas, and fixing others. A group that has become socially close and friendships forged.
Part of this was abruptly changed on Thursday June 12, 2008. Calls were made, paperwork filled out, meetings conducted. The end result was 2 positions were eliminated, not because of poor work ethics, negative conduct, or any lacking abilities, simply the company had to cut back. The manager has been left without a group, and the group without jobs.

But rather than dwelling in the past, this BLOG is about our future, our lives, our jobs, our friendship.
